Pedodontics (children’s dentistry)
Pedodontics, known as pediatric dentistry, is the branch of dentistry that deals with children.
A pedodontist is a dentist who specializes in this field.
When should I have my child’s dentistry?
The American Association of Pediatric Dentists and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend that the first dentistry visit be performed after the first tooth emerges (usually between 6 months and 1 year of age).
When do baby teeth change?
The change of baby teeth begins with the change of the lower front teeth at approximately 5.5 – 6 years of age, and ends with the change of the upper canines or upper second milk molars at 12-13 years of age.
Can baby teeth develop cavities?
Caries occur due to inadequate brushing and a sugar-heavy diet.
In addition, teeth should be brushed in the morning before breakfast and before going to bed at night. If the teeth are not brushed, sugar taken with food will stick to the teeth and cause cavities.
Why do my child’s teeth decay even though they brush their teeth regularly?
The role of our genetics, which is usually passed down from family to child, in decay is another issue. If the individual has a tooth structure that is prone to decay, this also affects children, but in this case, it can be prevented with more careful care and continuous expert support.
The constant use of baby bottles during infancy, antibiotics and medications used for iron deficiency rarely cause decay even with regular brushing.
Why are fillings and canals made for the baby teeth that will fall out?
The time when all baby teeth fall out is different. While the change of the baby incisors in the front is completed at about 8 years of age, the change of the molars in the back is completed at about 12 years of age. Instead of prematurely extracted baby teeth, there may be a gap in the tooth alignment so that the adjacent teeth cover them. In order to avoid any negative situations such as crooked teeth, baby teeth should be kept in the mouth until they fall out. Therefore, if possible, it is appropriate to perform fillings or canal treatments on decayed baby teeth.
